Offering Wholesale Select Lumber for Furniture & Cabinetry
In our more than 200 years of providing premium wholesale lumber to American furniture makers and cabinet makers, we at J. Gibson McIlvain have learned the specific requirements of those continually in-demand applications. While the industry has changed in many ways over the years, we still provide the same quality lumber for craftsmen across the nation.
Lumber Specifications for Furniture
Makers of quality furniture realize that specific sawing techniques impact stability and movement of the finished product. For instance, table or desk legs typically require rift sawn lumber with a consistent grain running down the leg. Not only does the grain’s direction impact stability, but it also affects how the lumber will move after it has become part of the finished piece of furniture. Quartersawn and flat sawn lumber help compensate for the possibility of movement, giving you the materials to provide a solid, long-lasting wood product.
Of course, grain patterns and coloring highly impact the appearance of the finished product. For the sake of consistency, furniture makers often prefer to build a piece from a single log or board. Whether you require a large piece to meet your need for consistency throughout or other furniture-making challenges, we welcome the opportunity to accommodate your need for specific lumber thicknesses, grain patterns, and species.
Because J. Gibson McIlvain caters to industries outside the furniture-making industry, we can provide a broad selection of furniture-grade materials. The NHLA grading systems, which were first created with the furniture-making industry in mind, can be of help. Because our millwork or flooring customers require clear faces that are longer than FAS grading specifies, we carry boards that are much clearer than FAS grading dictates.

No species is too exotic, though; if you have unique demands for species such as Iroko, Teak, or Zebra wood, we can satisfy those needs, as well.
