A Leading U.S. Supplier of Exotic Woods Since 1798
The J. Gibson McIlvain Company, founded in 1798, has always been more than willing to go the lengths for each and every customer. In order to offer our customers well rounded customer service, J. Gibson McIlvain Company staffs employees who have years of experience in varying aspects of the lumber business. Some of our employees have started out in kiln drying yards or sawmills. Their hands on experience is valuable to customers who have basic questions regarding the workability or durability of lumber choices.
Gib McIlvain, President
Gib McIlvain, president since 1979, began his career in the lumber industry by working in a West coast sawmill during the summer months. At this job, he gained experience in the planing and sawmill yards. Gib then began to travel the world looking to expand the company’s hardwood domestic lumber inventory.
Our Experienced Staff
Like Gib, many of our employees have hands on experience in a sawmill or such, as well as sales experience selling and purchasing quality lumber. This combination allows the J. Gibson McIlvain Company the experience and knowledge necessary to purchase only the finest selections of lumber to provide to our satisfied customers.
Our Inspection Process
Our representatives take their many years of experience in the lumber industry with them into forests around the world as they carefully inspect lumber selections for our inventory.
Once lumber has reached our Maryland facility, our trained employees will use only the most advanced technology and methods available to kiln or air dry the lumber. Our employees also check temperature and moisture levels each day to reduce kiln stress and lumber movement. We have found that our method of a slow and even drying process ensures that the lumber is of the highest quality.
During each stage of the process, our employees will do careful examinations of each board that passes through. They are checking for any kiln defects or defects created during the air drying process. Should they find such defects, the board will be pulled out.
Before an order is prepared for shipment, you can guarantee that it will undergo at least three or more hand inspections to ensure that only a top quality product reaches you.
